287 Students Kidnapped At Nigerian School, Released After 2 Weeks

 

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lim Ji-woo = 287 students kidnapped by militants in northwestern Nigeria have been released safely in about two weeks, the Associated Press reported on the 24th (local time).

Authorities in Kaduna state said on the 7th that all 287 students who were kidnapped after being attacked by militants at a village school in Kuri, Kaduna, were released.

Governor Uva Sani Kaduna thanked Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for allowing "the abductees to be released safely without being injured," without elaborating on the rescue.

The militants who kidnapped them earlier demanded a total ransom of 1 billion naira (about 820 million won) as a condition of their release and threatened to kill all of them if they exceeded the deadline of the 27th.

In response, President Tinubu vowed to rescue the students directly without paying "a penny" to the militants.

However, in Nigeria, where kidnapping by local armed groups is frequent, victims' families often pay ransom themselves, according to the Associated Press.

In most cases, authorities do not officially recognize these ransom payments.

No group has publicly claimed to have committed the crime, but local residents suspect it was the work of an armed group called Bandit.

In Nigeria, where security has been disrupted by frequent armed conflicts between various religious and armed groups, kidnappings for ransom are frequent, and criminals are rarely arrested.

Victims are usually released after their families pay a ransom or authorities negotiate with the criminal, but they may continue to be held or killed because they cannot pay a ransom.

According to the AP, at least 1,400 students have been kidnapped from Nigerian schools since 2014.

This month alone, there have been at least six large-scale kidnappings in northern Nigeria, with more than 600 victims.

Meanwhile, 17 students from Sokoto State boarding school who were kidnapped on the 10th following the abduction of Kaduna State were also released in about two weeks, Sokoto State authorities said.

Sokoto State authorities said in a statement that the rescue operation was carried out in cooperation with Nigerian government security authorities, as was the rescue of a student from kidnapping in Kaduna.

(서울=연합뉴스) 임지우 기자 = 나이지리아 북서부에서 무장세력에 의해 납치됐던 학생 287명이 약 2주 만에 무사히 풀려났다고 AP통신이 24일(현지시간) 보도했다.

 

카두나주 당국은 지난 7일 카두나주 쿠리가 마을 학교에서 무장세력의 공격을 받은 뒤 납치됐던 학생 287명이 전원 풀려났다고 이날 밝혔다.

 

우바 사니 카두나 주지사는 자세한 구출 경위는 밝히지 않은 채 볼라 티누부 나이지리아 대통령이 "피랍 학생들이 다친 곳 없이 무사히 풀려날 수 있도록" 해줬다며 감사를 표했다.

 

앞서 이들을 납치한 무장세력은 석방 조건으로 몸값 총 10억 나이라(약 8억2천만원)를 요구하며 기한인 27일을 넘기면 모두 살해하겠다고 위협했다.

 

이에 티누부 대통령은 무장세력에 몸값을 "한 푼도" 지불하지 않고 학생들을 직접 구출하겠다고 천명했다.

 

그러나 현지 무장단체에 의한 납치가 잦은 나이지리아에서는 주로 피해자 가족들이 직접 몸값을 마련해 지불하는 경우가 많다고 AP는 전했다.

 

당국은 이러한 몸값 지급을 공식적으로 인정하지 않는 경우가 대부분이다.

 

이번 범행을 저질렀다고 공개적으로 자처한 일당은 없으나, 현지 주민들은 '반디트'로 불리는 무장단체의 소행일 것으로 추정하고 있다.

 

여러 종교·무장단체들 간의 잦은 무력 충돌로 치안이 무너진 나이지리아에서는 몸값을 노린 납치가 빈번하며, 범인이 체포되는 경우도 극히 드물다.

 

피해자들은 보통 가족들이 몸값을 지불하거나 당국이 범인과 협상을 해 풀려나지만, 몸값을 내지 못해 계속 잡혀 있거나 살해당하는 경우도 있다.

 

AP에 따르면 2014년 이후 최근까지 나이지리아 학교에서 납치된 학생 수는 최소 1천400명이 넘는 것으로 집계됐다.

 

이달 들어서만 나이지리아 북부에서는 대규모 납치 사건이 최소 6차례 발생했으며 피해자는 600명이 넘는다.

 

한편 카두나주 납치에 뒤이어 지난 10일 납치됐던 소코토주 기숙 학교 학생 17명도 이날 약 2주 만에 풀려났다고 소코토주 당국이 밝혔다.

 

소코토주 당국은 성명에서 해당 구출 작전은 카두나주 피랍 학생 구출과 마찬가지로 나이지리아 정부 안보 당국과의 협력을 통해 이뤄졌다고 밝혔다.
