Elder Jethro

Exodus 18:19~27 “If you do this, God will direct you, you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace.” So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. (23~25)

Moses, Jethro, and Jochebed who were the central figures of the Exodus knew an important fact. They knew the reason behind the recurring world disasters, the answer that the Bible provided, and the time schedule of breaking the frame of destruction. Likewise, amazing works will begin when you know this and hold onto it as your covenant. What devotion did Elder Jethro offer after discovering this time schedule?

1. An Absolute Decision
He made the absolute decision that nobody could understand. Elder Jethro received guidance from God and accepted Moses, a failed runaway, as his very own son-in-law. It was not an easy decision to act against the Pharaoh’s orders and accept a criminal into his family. On top of this, Moses was in complete financial destitution. But Elder Jethro’s decision was directly connected to the miracles of Exodus.

2. A Hidden Devotion
Elder Jethro offered a hidden devotion that was unseen by others. He enabled his son-in-law, Moses, to stand before Pharaoh and within this process arose the miracles that transcended human understanding. The Red Sea split before the Israelites during the Exodus, and God protected them with a pillar of cloud and pillar of fire. He even provided them with manna and quails to eat in the wilderness. After this, God gave them the blessing to make the Ark of the Covenant. One person’s hidden devotion made it possible for amazing answers in Egypt and in the wilderness to arise.

3. A Revealed Devotion
These hidden devotions led to revealed devotions. Jethro who saw the works of the past could also see the present and future works that would take place. Seeing the important time schedule before him, Jethro advised Moses to select chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, and of fifties and thereby received the answer of systematizing the Israel people. Elder Jethro looked for Israelites who feared God and prepared them for battle. From then on, God’s works that no one could block continuously arose.

[Prayer of the Evangelist] Dear God, may leaders like Moses be raised through the life of a lay leader who has the Gospel. Let me not be deceived by visible reality, but instead receive the answers to save this age.
