Those Who Know Their Opponent

1 Samuel 17:41~47 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” (45~47)

The Israelites who escaped from Egypt constantly faced difficulties because of the Philistines. However, the Philistines could not invade during Samuel’s life. When Samuel became old and feeble, the Philistines, standing behind Goliath, again invaded Israel. At that time, David, who was doing an errand for his father, heard Goliath mocking God and immediately defeated him. What was the mystery of David’s victory?

1. The Mystery of Prayer in Your Daily Life
If you pray even for five minutes holding onto the covenant in your daily life, God’s works will arise. In his daily life, when David was alone, he possessed the mystery of prayer and enjoyed the greatest covenant. David prayed in the morning(Psalm 5:3), and he prayed at night(Psalm 17:3). As s shepherd, he cultivated his skills and did not lose a single sheep to a lion or bear. Although David was just a shepherd who fed his sheep, God chose him to become king(Psalm 78:70~72). When David went to King Saul who was afflicted with evil spirits and sang praises, the evil spirits departed immediately.

2. Strength in Your Daily Life
David defeated Goliath with the strength he enjoyed in his daily life. He confronted crises with the faith and skills from his daily life as well. Goliath looked down on David and cursed him in the name of his gods(1 Samuel 17:42~43). This was when David confessed his unwavering covenant that he possessed(1 Samuel 17:45~47). With one fatal blow, David defeated Goliath with what he had. As a child of God, you must cultivate your spiritual strength and skills in your daily life.

3. The Mystery of Being with God in Your Daily Life
Your opponent is neither Satan nor the world, but is in fact your unbelief. David enjoyed the mystery of being with God and for the rest of his life had victory in his fight against unbelief. Even after he succeeded, David did not shake. With the mystery of enjoying God being with him in his daily life, he prepared for temple construction. After he became king, he built the City of David and made his nation strong. Furthermore, he moved the Ark of the Covenant that he heard about when he was young from Samuel and completed the preparation to build the temple.

[Prayer of the Evangelist] Dear God, may I be equipped with Your strength and power in my everyday life. Give me spiritual faith that does not change whether I face crises or even after I succeed.
