What Was the Reason for Crossing the Jordan River?

Joshua 3:1~13 │ The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” (7)

Everyone will face decisive moments. Although you can predict when those moments may come, more times than not, you’ll never know. The situations, the attitude of acceptance, and the individual choices will vary greatly. However, at those decisive moments that come to God’s children, rest assured that the will of God is always hidden. Then, what is God’s will?

1. Everybody Wants to See
Ordinary daily life or trivial anecdotes are sparingly covered by the news or written in articles. Usually, rare and amazing news; terrible events; or serious disasters are quickly gathered and disseminated. In that sense, the splitting of the Jordan River was a newsworthy event. Those who didn’t know God heard and the Israelites who complained; worried; and focused on their scars from slavery and their discomfort of living in the wilderness saw that event themselves. Even the people who lived in Canaan, where the Israelites were going to enter, heard the news and were melting in fear. Those who directly crossed the Jordan River shared their unforgettable shock and emotions with their children and the posterity.

2. Risks and Opportunities Come Together
At that time, God commanded the Israelites to cross the Jordan during the rainy season. The Israelites could’ve used their own strength to walk or swim across the low- level part of the river. However, there was a reason why God made it difficult even though there was an easier way. He wanted them to look only at Him without relying on their own thoughts, efforts, and strength. God wanted them to confirm and confess that without His guidance and protection, they wouldn’t be able to live even for a moment. A crisis may seem dangerous, but it’s also an opportunity. If you’re standing in front of an impossible reality like the Jordan River, then it’s your greatest opportunity to look toward “only Jesus Christ.” Within any crisis is your chance to gain sufficient and complete strength.

Dear God, I pray that Jesus Christ who blocked disasters; bound the forces of darkness; and opened the way of salvation, will become my Master today. Pease help me to focus solely on “only Gospel” during decisive moments. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
